OILD TOWN - A woman is in custody Saturday on suspicion of starting a small brush fire in the San Diego River just north of Old Town.
The incident occurred at 8:29 a.m. near Friars Road and Napa Street, San Diego Police officer Frank Cali said.
Cali identified the suspect taken into custody as April Stoumbaugh, 36.
"Stoumbaugh was seen using a lighter to start a fire in the riverbed," Cali said. "She left the scene and was detained by officers. She was positively identified as the person who started the fire by a witness."
Cali said about one acre of open land burned in the riverbed before the blaze was extinguished by firefighters.
The Metro Arson Strike Team was investigating, Cali said.
