Shots fired inside University City bank; suspected robber shot

Female suspect arrested

SAN DIEGO - A man suspected of robbing a University City bank was shot by a security guard but was able to flee the scene, according to San Diego police.

Police said a man and woman entered the Wells Fargo Bank branch in the 8400 block of Genesee Avenue just after 4:30 p.m. and handed a demand note to a teller. A firearm was also displayed, police said.

Moments later, a security guard confronted the couple and after some kind of exchange, the guard fired two shots, striking the male suspect. Police did not say what led to the gunfire or if the suspects also fired shots.

Police said the male suspect was able to run away, but the female was injured as she attempted to escape. She was arrested and then transported to the hospital with an undisclosed injury.

10News learned a witness followed the male suspect from the bank to a nearby apartment complex. The witness said the suspect appeared to have blood on his head and chest.

He provided police and 10News with a photo he took of the suspect while following him.

"I saw him going into a parking lot and immediately saw him pull out with someone else in the driver's seat and followed him for a little way and was calling 911," said Ellis.

The car was described as a 1990s teal Honda Civic with a paper license plate that reads "VTEC."

San Diego police said they believe the male suspect was dropped off at the Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa to be treated for his injuries.

Police are continuing to search for the Honda.

No other injuries were reported.
