Man wanted in Florida murders is arrested 2,000 miles away in Wyoming

WHEATLAND, Whyo. - A man wanted in the murders of his mother and brother in Florida was arrested Thursday night 2,000 miles away in Wyoming.

A Wyoming State Trooper was patrolling Interstate 25, near Wheatland, Wyo., about 70 miles from Colorado, when he saw a pickup truck with Florida plates on the side of the highway.

The driver told the trooper he had run out of gas and was waiting for someone to bring more when the trooper realized the man and his female passenger might be wanted in Florida. The couple's pictures had been sent to all Wyoming troopers that morning.

Deputies were called. The Wyoming State Patrol said the deputies helped the trooper arrest Steven D. Tompkins, 24, and his passenger, Joycelin Luck, 19.

Investigators said Tompkins is accused of killing his mother, Shelley Tompkins, and his brother, Daniel Tompkins, at a home in Lehigh Acres, Fla.

Tompkins has been charged in Wyoming with possession of stolen property. Police say the pickup truck he was driving was stolen.

Luck was reported as a missing person from Orangeburg, South Carolina. Troopers said she has been charged in Wyoming with being an accessory to possession of stolen property.
