Students at Encanto Elementary School surprised with free bicycles for Christmas

Donations came from MTS

SAN DIEGO - Dozens of local students will have a special Christmas thanks to a donation from the Metropolitan Transit System.

On Friday, first-grade students at Encanto Elementary School gathered for an assembly on bike safety. Little did they know, learning about helmets and other safety tips was not the only reason they were there.

Some MTS employees presented bicycles to two outstanding students, and they even got the chance to test drive their new bikes in front of their classmates.

However, a special visitor stopped in from the North Pole with a special announcement. With their eyes closed, the first graders anxiously counted down, waiting to find out what Santa had up his sleeve.

Then the news broke -- 82 students will be receiving brand new bicycles.

Each year, MTS employees raise money to give kids who live in underprivileged communities a gift to put under their tree.

School officials said in addition to making Christmas special, the bikes are motivation for students to succeed.

"This was a big motivator. We want to encourage the students that they do well in school and also attend school every day," said Adolfo Garza, the acting vice principal at Encanto Elementary School.

This is the ninth year the MTS has hosted the bike giveaway.

They also gave $50 gift cards to 50 kindergarten students.
