Police ID victim in Sunset Cliffs fatal fall; say Anna Bachman was posing for photo when she fell

SAN DIEGO - An investigation is under way into the death of a 25-year-old Northern California woman who fell about 40 to 50 feet from Sunset Cliffs Sunday while posing for a picture.

San Diego police identified the woman as Anna Bachman, a Santa Rosa native and graduate student at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The fall from the cliffs between Ladera and Carmelo streets was reported about 5:20 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Bachman was visiting family in San Diego and was with her sister when she fell, San Diego police said.

"It was a beautiful day. It's just a shame that something like this happened," said SDPD Lt. Paul Phillips.

The area where Bachman fell isn't roped off but is marked with signs warning of unstable cliffs.

"It's marked very clearly to be cautious on the cliffs," said Phillips.

Police say she was simply standing too close to the edge when she lost her balance.

"You know for all intents and purposes it's just a tragedy," said Phillips.

Officers do not believe any alcohol was involved.

"There were quite a few other people who actually saw this. There were two nurses who were here that hustled down there really quick and tried to do CPR as well as I believe a couple surfers that were in the water as well," said Phillips.

The victim's family has been notified in Chicago and are now planning to fly to San Diego so they can be together.

"Our thoughts and prayers are out with the family ... Trying to get over something like this could take a lifetime," Phillips said.
