Storm chasers capture dramatic video from inside a tornado

Loud roar accompanies wind up to 175 mph

SMITH COUNTY, Kan. - Have you ever seen the inside of a tornado?

A couple of storm chasers recorded this video in Smith County, Kan. on Monday afternoon.

Sean Casey and Brandon Ivey were in a specialized tank-like vehicle they call a "Tornado Intercept Vehicle," or TIV.

Casey and Ivey were often seen on "Storm Chasers" a series that ran on Discovery Channel. Casey has been on the road for years, trying to record the inside of a tornado for a film that was released in 2011.

The storm chasers said the winds in the Kansas storm were between 150 and 175 mph – strong enough to blow open a hatch, force open a door and rip instruments off the top of the TIV.

The vehicle stayed on the ground.

The National Weather Service received reports of 16 possible tornadoes Monday in Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado.
