10News Poll: Most San Diegans Aware Of New Water Rules

Mollie Solorzano loves tending to her garden, but beginning Monday she will only be able to water it three days a week based on her odd-numbered address.

"I'm an odd so I get to water on the odd days, and I think I must be Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday," said Solorzano.

Solorzano is one of thousands of San Diegans who has heeded the warnings from the San Diego Water Department. She received a notice with her water bill that told her about the new rules.

On Monday, the city of San Diego unveiled their latest tool -- a wrapped trolley car reminding people to conserve water.

"I think it's a matter of repetition; making sure you get the message out consistently," said Luis Generoso of the San Diego Water Department.

According to an exclusive 10News poll, 63 percent of San Diegans said they were aware of the new water restrictions.

However, only 37 percent of those respondents knew when they could water their lawn under those new rules.

Beau Clough of Golden Hills said it was pretty easy to figure out.

"It's not confusing. It's just going to be more getting the information out to everybody I think is going to be the thing," said Clough.

The city said it would campaign all summer long for water conservation and if not enough is saved by the fall residents may have to deal with new rules and penalties.

Assistant Public Utilities Director Alex Ruiz said, "It could be anything from additional fines. It could be anything up to allocations, which we were talking about earlier this year."

Solorzano said she is ready and hopes her neighbors help out.

"Those people who are accustomed to doing whatever they want, I'm sorry, you just can't do it anymore," said Solorzano.

The city won't know if its customers are doing their job until the middle of July when individual water meters will be read.

When bills are issued afterwards, residents will know if they are saving water.
