SAN DIEGO -- To enforce San Diego's new, tougher water regulations, water field representatives are being dispatched around the city.Water field representative Marlene Muse's job is to look for water being wasted.Working for the San Diego Water Department it is her job to check out reports of wasted water, like runoff or broken sprinklers.
Muse might be visiting more homes after June 1 when San Diego will toughen its water rules, including restricting when and how long lawns can be watered and how to wash cars."We give them a chance to correct their behavior and that's what we want," said Muse. The reports of wasted water come from the public, according to Muse. She said those reports have increased in the past year. Muse used to get about 30 calls a week, but in two days this week she received 120 calls."I am flooded with calls," said Muse.To respond to the number of calls, the city is training four new field representatives to assist her.Muse will need the help, especially when problems come up.One of the many problems facing the field representatives includes hearing about a wasted water problem but have the evidence evaporate when they arrive.Muse makes her checks and calls all property owners, even if the owner is the city of San Diego. When asked if she investigates the city, Muse responded, "Oh, sure."This summer, Muse and her fellow field representatives will be able to fine those who continue to waste water. The city could fine customers up to $1,000, but Muse said the water department is not in the business of making money."We want people to comply and we really mean business about saving water," said Muse.
