Recent Storms Not Enough To End Drought

The string of recent storms that have pounded California has paid off, but officials said it is not enough.

"It's gone from a very bleak situation to a serious situation," said Ken Weinberg of the San Diego County Water Authority.

Weinberg's job is to track how much water the county has, and he just received a little bit of good news.

"It's an improvement. It's the difference between having 20 percent cutbacks and 15 percent cutbacks," said Weinberg.

State water officials have 5 percent more water available to give to San Diego residents.

Still, residents should expect to see mandatory cutbacks this summer.

"It's going to take quite a bit to get us out of this. This is the third dry year that we've experienced," said Weinberg.

The County Water Authority said the 5 percent increase comes from the California State Water Project, and it only represents about one-third of its water supply.

The slight increase would only have a small effect on the county's ration proposals.

"A couple of snowstorms do not end the drought because of the issues of protecting fish species in the Sacramento delta. We have several years to kind of manage through this," said Weinberg.

Water officials said all residents will have to manage through this because for the third year, the Sierra snowpack is way below where it should be.

In San Diego, local reservoirs are not where they should be either.

Residents still do not know how much they will be asked to cut back on water use this summer.

The county water district said they hope to know more by mid-April.
