SAN DIEGO -- In a visit to the Sweetwater Reservoir in November, San Diego was in desperate need of water.Fast-forward three months, and a few rain storms later, things are a little better. The water level at the Sweetwater Reservoir has gone up six feet.
Don Thomson, the Director of Water Quality at the Sweetwater Reservoir, said the recent rainfall is great but it's just not enough."But we are a long ways from having a full reservoir. We're about 41 percent full," said Thomson. "If we had storms like this for a month, six weeks, that would do it."But the rain needs to fall elsewhere as well. Even if all of the county's reservoirs were full, the county would still need to import water. That would mean it needs to rain in Nevada and snow in the mountains."Just to get back up to average conditions would probably take in the order of 15 to 20 feet of snow," said Bob Yamada of the San Diego County Water Authority. In the meantime, water officials will continue to ask you to cut back on how much water you use."We had asked people to conserve 10 percent. What we actually got was somewhere around 5 percent," said Yamada. This July, county residents might be force to ration water or risk getting fined, especially if the recent rain dries up."It's not enough to cover our needs," said Thomson.Officials said the best way to cut back on water use is to stop watering lawns.Water officials said homeowners can usually wait up to ten days after the last rainfall before turning sprinklers on again.
