Coaster commuters should expect continued delays and fewer trains operating until after the New Year, 10News reported.

Last week's freight train derailment did more damage than originally thought.

Daily Coaster riders notice the changes resulting from last week's derailment.

"The train's coming less often -- every 45 minutes," said one commuter.

With eight fewer Coasters in service, there's bound to be a ripple effect.

Commuters who rely on the Coaster trains should expect delays for at least the next 10 days, 10News reported.

Rail repair work stops every time a Coaster passes through the stretch between Sorrento Valley and Miramar Hill.

The line was damaged last week when a freight train dragged its cars for about 2 miles before ultimately derailing.

The North County Transit District said the so-called slow order will remain in effect until workers can replace a switcher and install new rail road ties and rails. It's a snag in the system that means delays across the board.

Coaster service is expected to be back to normal by Monday, Jan. 3, 2005.
