Bananas Cause Headache For Commuters

Northbound I-5 Down To One Lane

The North County morning commute went bananas Wednesday.

A big rig carrying 48,000 pounds of the tropical fruit crashed and toppled over on Interstate 5 in the Camp Pendleton area, snarling traffic for miles, authorities reported.

The non-injury accident occurred shortly before 5:30 a.m., when a commercial trucker, distracted while glancing at paperwork, lost control of the tractor-trailer he was driving in the Camp Pendleton area.

The northbound vehicle jackknifed and overturned, blocking several lanes just south of the Orange County line, according to the California Highway Patrol.

None of the thousands of bananas -- which were en route to a Los Angeles-area Vons -- spilled, but it took crews hours to off-load them and right the big rig.

All lanes were clear again by about 11:30 a.m., CHP public affairs Officer Tom Kerns said, but miles of the interstate remained congested into the early afternoon.
