SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Unified School District closed Kearny High School for the next two weeks due to a student testing positive for swine flu.San Diego health officials confirmed the 15-year-old student's case Monday at a press conference. However, preparations are already being made to protect students for when they return to school on May 18.
For custodians that means two weeks of cleaning and sanitizing of every classroom, bathroom and office on the Linda Vista campus where Kearny High is located. On Monday, the only people on the Kearny High campus were four custodians charged with scouring and scrubbing the school's classrooms."Everything that someone can touch we're going to wipe it all down with super disinfectant," said Peter Johnson, plant operations manager at Kearny High School. For the first few days, the crew will be cleaning touchable surfaces like desks, chairs and doorknobs. Then the crew will do a deep cleaning from ceiling to floor."Obviously we'll get into the walls, floors, and shampooing carpet, deep cleaning. It won't just be a wipe-down with the disinfectants and things like that," said Johnson. It is measures like that will make sure the school has been completely disinfected before students return to school in two weeks."We are going to detail everything to make sure everything is good for the kids and that things are ready to go, so when they come for sure they know that they don't need to be afraid of anything," said custodian Teresita Chavez.
