Cruise Lines Diverting Ships To SD Amid Swine Flu Fears

UPDATED: 6:39 pm PDT April 28, 2009

Cruise lines are suspending calls on Mexican ports and instead diverting to San Diego due to fears over the outbreak of swine flu, officials announced Tuesday.

So far, 10 cruise ships have announced plans to berth in San Diego instead of Mexico, according to the Port of San Diego.

According to the port, Princess Cruise Lines intends to divert its 2,670-passenger ship Sapphire Princess from Puerto Vallarta to San Diego on Thursday.

Carnival Cruise Lines announced that it would cancel all calls to Mexican ports for cruises between Thursday and Monday.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that travelers avoid nonessential travel to Mexico, where about 2,000 people are believed to have developed swine flu and about 150 have died.
