The state is sending veterinarians to pig farms to look for signs of swine flu.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture said Tuesday that its veterinarians will give farmers information about swine flu and check the general health of pig herds. They also will test any pigs showing signs of respiratory disease.

Department veterinarians also will monitor pigs that are being checked in for exhibits at county fairs and test any with a history of respiratory disease. Sick animals will be turned away.

California ranks 20th in the production of pork in the U.S. according to the National Pork Board.
