10News Leadership Award Winner Nancy Weare
Recognize San Diegans Who Initiate Solutions
10News honors Nancy Weare for founding Del Mar Community Connections (DMCC), a nonprofit organization run by volunteers that provides a variety of health, education, transportation, and cultural services for seniors and those with special needs within the community of Del Mar.Del Mar Community Connections was started in 1999 after a group of residents met to discuss how to help the fast growing senior population gain access to needed services. Over the years, DMCC Connections has partnered with over fifty agencies, governments and businesses to help fill many social gaps. One of the main services provided by DMCC is a free transportation service for those with limited mobility. The Grocery Shuttle Service transports individuals to Ralph's (Tuesdays), Albertson's (Thursdays), Henry's and Trader Joes (alternating Wednesdays). Individual rides to specific appointments are also offered by Del Mar citizens who have volunteered their time to drive neighbors in need (mileage is reimbursed by DMCC).DMCC also offers legal and social services to seniors free of charge. An attorney is made available once a month to help with consumer problems, age discrimination, fraud, abuse and neglect, landlord and tenant issues and wills. Social activities include: neighborhood coffees featuring community speakers, support group referrals, free car wash services from local students, computer tutoring, pet grooming, household chores and reading to the visually impaired.
Most DMCC services are offered free of charge but there are some services like taxi vouchers and senior fitness classes that are offered for a nominal fee. Many hours of volunteer time and community donations make this possible. The group estimates that their services enrich the lives of over 500 seniors per month. For more information, please contact Del Mar Community Connections at 858-792-7565 or www.dmcc.
