10News Leadership Award Winner Kama Dean
10News honors Kama Dean for founding Pro Peninsula whose conservation efforts and goals work to strengthen individual and community efforts to protect the natural environment throughout the Baja California Peninsula.As a part of her UCSD master's thesis and derived from her personal passion for the environment, Kama Dean founded Pro Peninsula in 2001. Her goal was to create a network of strong and effective environmental organizations, backed by an educated and active public working towards the common goal of environmental conservation.Pro Peninsula has since then grown into a very successful organization that provides conservation efforts for the Baja California Peninsula by promoting social awareness and participation in order to counter the relentless threats to the region’s environment, while at the same time promoting sustainable development alternatives. Pro Peninsula is a source of knowledge when it comes to local and global environmental issues. It has served in inspiring the San Diego and Baja community in becoming more active and informed about conservation efforts.
Kama is now the Executive Director of the organization, spearheading all of the five successful programs for sea turtle conservation, education, coastal conservation, tourism efforts and capacity building. She works passionately to ensure the success of the organization as well as serves as a mentor for many other grad students following in similar foot steps.
