10News Leadership Award Winner Craig Pollard

10News honors Craig Pollard for founding the charitable organization Cancer for College (CFC) which provides scholarships to current and former cancer patients who are currently enrolled in college.

CFC was developed while Pollard was visiting a Ronald McDonald House in 1993. He discovered that when a parent has a sick child under medical care, saving money for college is not always a priority and sometimes can prove to be difficult due to the high cost of medical treatment. Pollard is a two-time cancer survivor himself and personally was affected by cancer at the young age of fifteen and nineteen. He experienced the difficulty of battling cancer and college while attending the University of Southern California.

CFC relies solely on grants from foundations and corporations, donations from the communities, and its annual fundraiser. The lead fundraising event for CFC is its annual golf tournament and auction. Typically held in the fall at a San Diego golf course, this event gathers participants and scholarship recipients past and present for an enjoyable day of golf and fellowship. Scholarship amounts range from $100.00 to four year perpetual scholarships. The biggest donors for CFC are actor Will Ferrell and Fed-Ex.

This year, Cancer for College will provide over $200,000 in scholarships to both cancer survivors and amputees.
