Bill Griffith

Anchor, 10News This Morning And 10News Midday

Many San Diegans consider Bill Griffith to be the "dean" of San Diego television; in part because he's been on the air with 10News since February of 1976 (the longest continuing tenure at one station by anyone currently working in the market), and in part because he has done just about everything there is to do in broadcast news.

Since arriving in town at the age of 27, Bill has been a 10News weekend anchor, sports director, talk show host, magazine show host and since 1996, the co-anchor of 10News Live at 5 a.m., 6 a.m. and 11 a.m.

During that time, Bill has earned multiple Emmy and Golden Mike awards for his work, as well as the coveted Drew Silvern Award from the San Diego Press Club, in recognition of his "courage in the pursuit of journalism while still upholding the highest standards of ethics, fairness and truth." Bill earned the award in 2004 for reporting on his 6-month battle with male breast cancer -- an extremely rare disease in men, and one which is often fatal.

Bill took 10News viewers, and those who visited his site on 10News.com, on his deeply personal journey through diagnosis, surgery and chemotherapy. Tens of thousands from all over the world read his online journal, and thousands more responded with e-mails of encouragement, support and requests for advice.

Bill gives most of the credit for his recovery to his wife Jenny, to whom he has been married since 1977. They have two grown sons -- both married to wonderful women, and three grandchildren -- so far.

The family enjoys spending time together water skiing, golfing, worshipping at their church in Rancho San Diego, or just playing with their Chihuahuas and Papillions at their East County home.

Since recovering from his cancer, Bill has become involved in organizations such as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Rebecca and John Moores Cancer center at UCSD, the San Diego branch of The City of Hope, and Children's Hospital's Celebration of Champions for children with cancer and leukemia. Bill also receives invitations to speak at churches and cancer organizations throughout the Southern California area.
