US Soccer fails to qualify for World Cup in heartbreaking defeat

(KGTV) - Team USA will not be in the 2018 World Cup.

USA was stunned by a loss to Trinidad and Tobago Tuesday, falling 2-1. The U.S. will have to wait until 2022 for their next chance at winning a World Cup berth.

The U.S. loss marks the first time Team USA hasn't qualified for the World Cup since 1986.

The US fell behind 2-0 in the match, though pulled closer with a Christian Pulisic goal to bring it to 2-1. A game-tying goal would've kept the US in contention and it looked to be within reach with a miraculous shot from Clint Dempsey, though he came up empty.

The US began Tuesday in third place in the CONCACAF round of play, two points ahead of Panama and Honduras. Panama won against Costa Rica and Honduras won over Mexico - jumping ahead of the US in the standings a clinching a spot for the Cup.

The USA loss pushed Team USA down to fifth place, failing to qualify for the 2018 trip to Russia.
