Tribute to Tony Gwynn: Public memorial Thursday

SAN DIEGO - Tony Gwynn fans are invited to Petco Park Thursday to pay tribute to the Hall of Famer, who recently passed away at age 54 after a bout with cancer. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the official memorial is scheduled to begin at 7:19 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Again, the gates open at 5:30 p.m. and you'll want to be in a seat by 7:19 p.m. for the memorial.

Free parking will be provided at the Parcel C and Tailgate lots on Imperial Avenue, on the southeast side of Petco Park, the Padres Parkade garage at 10th Avenue at J Street, and the structure at Sixth Avenue and K Street.

Fans will be allowed to enter through the Home Plate or Park Boulevard gates. Fans can also enter through the Gaslamp Gate on 7th Avenue or the East Village gate on 10th Avenue.

All three Metropolitan Transit System Trolley lines offer direct service to Petco Park. The Green Line through Mission Valley will offer increased service to Petco Park, beginning at 5:38 p.m. on Thursday.  There are multiple free park-and-ride locations along the Green Line, including 5,000 free parking spots at Qualcomm Stadium. North County Transit District southbound Coaster trains will leave Oceanside at 5:04 p.m. and 5:40 p.m.  Coaster trains serve all North County coastal areas, including Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach and Sorrento Valley.  RegionPlus fares include free transfer to the Trolley at Santa Fe Depot.
