San Diego Chargers name quarterbacks coach Frank Reich new offensive coordinator

Reich replaces Ken Whisenhunt

SAN DIEGO - The Chargers elevated quarterbacks coach Frank Reich to offensive coordinator, team officials announced Tuesday.

Reich replaces Ken Whisenhunt, who left the team Monday to become the head coach of the Tennessee Titans.

Under Reich's tutelage, quarterback Philip Rivers led the league in completion percentage and was named to his fifth career Pro Bowl.

Reich was an NFL quarterback for 14 seasons, spending his first 10 seasons with the Buffalo Bills as the backup to Hall of Fame QB Jim Kelly. He also played for the Carolina Panthers, New York Jets and Detroit Lions.

Reich began his coaching career in 2006 as an offensive assistant with the Indianapolis Colts. He moved on to the Arizona Cardinals in 2012 as a wide receivers coach before joining Mike McCoy's staff in 2013.
