SAN DIEGO -

The San Diego Chargers Thursday hired former Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt to be the team's new offensive coordinator.

The 50-year-old Whisenhunt coached the Cardinals from 2007-2012 and led Arizona to their first Super Bowl appearance in 2008. He was the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive coordinator from 2004-2006, and he was instrumental in the Steelers' win over Seattle in Super Bowl XL.

Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said, "Ken has a lot of experience and has had much success in the NFL in both Arizona and Pittsburgh," said McCoy. "He has a very creative mind and will be a great asset for me and our team.  I look forward to working with him."

According to team officials, Whisenhunt and his wife, Alice, have a son, Kenneth, Jr., and a daughter, Mary Ashley.
