Qualifying begins for La Costa professional tennis tournament

Main draw starts Monday at La Costa Resort & Spa

CARLSBAD, Calif. - Qualifying play begins Saturday for the Southern California Open women's tennis tournament at La Costa Resort and Spa.  32-singles players seek four spots in the 28-player main draw.

The top seed in the qualifying is Marina Erakovic of New Zealand, who is 79th on the Women's Tennis Association rankings.

Marina faces Zoe Scandalis, a San Diego native who will be a junior this fall at USC.

Other participants include Coco Vandeweghe, who reached the final of the 2012 Bank of the West Classic at Stanford; Alexandra Stevenson, a 1999 Wimbledon semifinalist; and Nicole Gibbs, the 2012 and 2013 NCAA women's singles champion.

Qualifying will conclude Sunday, with the main draw play beginning Monday.
