There is no joy at Petco -- the mighty Padres struck out Sunday, 3-0, against the San Francisco Giants, ending San Diego's hopes of forcing a National League West playoff game Monday at Petco against the Giants.
On the final weekend of the regular season, the Padres traveled to the Bay Area needing to sweep the first-place Giants to force a playoff. They won Friday and Saturday, but were shut out Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-7, to snag the National League's wildcard spot.
If the Padres and Giants had finished with the same record, a playoff game would have been played in San Diego to determine the NL West champion, and the loser of that game would have played another elimination game in Atlanta to determine the NL wildcard team.
San Diego led the Giants by six and a half games in late-August, but a month-long hitting slump sent the Padres into a tailspin through September, and the Giants moved past them into first place for good Sept. 26.
