'Fear the bolo' t-shirt creators forced to change popular design

Asked by NFL to take off thunderbolt on design

SAN DIEGO - The bolo tie has become a money maker, and perhaps the easiest way to tie yourself to one remarkable tie is merchandising.

"In the last three to four hours, we've sold a good 25 percent of our inventory," said Christopher Nelson, who is with San Diego Multi-Media Inc. He is selling just one of the latest incarnations of the bolo.

At the James Gang Printing Shop in Ocean Beach, their version of the bolo was going gangbusters until they were sidelined.

The NFL tightly controls imaging and asked them to remove their thunderbolt in the middle of their bolo. The new print now features a bolo that reads "SD."

At the Tilted Kilt, you can bolo up for $12 with their shirt.

Beyond the bolo, another business owner is capitalizing with shirts that show the face of Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers that reads, "Rivers Rising."

Some fans believe in the luck of the bolo to carry them to the Super Bowl.

"If they win this game come Sunday, I predict they go to the Super Bowl and I predict they win," said fan Ryan Duncan. "I think this is one of those magical years … a magic carpet ride."
