SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Chargers announced Thursday that veteran linebacker Takeo Spikes has been released by the team.

Spikes, 36, has played 15 years in the National Football League. He was with the Chargers from 2011 to 2012. He played 32 games during his time with the Chargers and has appeared in a total of 219 games and was a starter in 215 of them.

According to a statement, Spikes tallied a total 1,737 career tackles with 218 tackles with the Chargers.

“Takeo is a true professional and a class act,” said General Manager Tom Telesco. “We’re grateful for his many contributions to the Chargers organization, both on and off the field, and wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

According to NFL.com, Spikes intends to play in the NFL for another season and will probably fill a a role as a reserve inside linebacker.
