The Baseball Column: What To Expect

Second-Half Locks

POSTED: 12:04 pm PDT July 15, 2005
UPDATED: 12:53 pm PDT July 15, 2005

Here are my on-the-money predictions for the second half of the baseball season. If none of this stuff comes true, then the world is spinning hopelessly out of control.

American League
East: Boston should be able to hold off a late charge from the Yanks, while Baltimore will flounder around .500. The Yankees Wild Card hopes hinge on a trade to strengthen the pitching staff.
Burning question: Can Curt Schilling be effective as a reliever?

Central: The White Sox will end Minnesota’s three year reign. Minnesota will stay in thick of the Wild Card race followed closely by Cleveland. If the Yankees don’t get hot, the Twins should be the Wild Card team.
Burning question: Will Johan Santana duplicate (or at least come close to) his 2004 second half?

West: The Angels are the clear-cut winner here. Texas and Oakland will hang around the fringe of the Wild Card race.
Burning question: Can the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim justify their pretentious sounding name by becoming the AL’s best team?

National League
East: Washington will be in a tight battle with Atlanta for the division crown. It would be nice to see the Nats pull it off, but we won’t hold our breath. You also have to think the underachieving Marlins will make a run.
Burning question: If the Nationals hang on, will Bush nominate Frank Robinson to fill the Supreme Court vacancy?

Central: St. Louis in a landslide. The Cubbies will probably make another ill-fated run at the Wild Card and don’t count out Houston.
Burning question: Is it the Cards year?

West: The Padres by default. Arizona is too green, the Dodgers are a mess and Barry won’t help the Giants that much.
Burning question: Will Barry pass the Babe?
