Gary, The Player
On Monday it was announced that the fan involved in last week's skirmish with Yankee outfielder Gary Sheffield at Fenway Park would have his season tickets revoked. Sheffield, meanwhile, was told he wouldn't be suspended for the incident. Many in the media, especially the former players, commended Sheffield for showing such remarkable "restraint."I don’t get it.
Restraint would have been to completely ignore the idiot, not shove him and stare him down. It’s nice to see that the bar is so low that we praise someone for not reacting to a shove with a punch to the face. Sheffield proved he was no thug, but let’s not make him into a hero either. The Toothless Tigers
Just when it looked like the Twins might be slipping, Dmitri Young came to town. The husky DH declared that the AL Central was a two-team race between his Tigers and the Indians prior to Detroit’s series at the Metrodome last week. The Twins proceeded to sweep the still toothless Tigers and win two out of three in Cleveland over the weekend. The Tigers lineup, with Ivan Rodriguez, Carlos Guillen, Young and a healthy Magglio Ordenez, is imposing. But Detroit's starting rotation of Mike Maroth, Jeremy, Bonderman, Jason Johnson and Nate Robertson is not. The fact is, the Tiger farm system has produced next to nothing in the last decade. As long as that continues, Detroit won’t be winning anything.
