Wynn, Utes Rough Up New Mexico

POSTED: 11:54 pm PST November 7, 2009

(Sports Network) - Jordan Wynn threw for 297 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-28 passing, as 17th-ranked Utah routed New Mexico, 45-14, at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Eddie Wide rushed for 145 yards and two scores on 20 carries for the Utes (8-1, 5-0 MWC), who have won six consecutive games.

"Eddie's play has been the most important facet of our offensive production during the last six games," Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said.

Sausan Shakerin added a touchdown on the ground and 100 yards on 16 touches. Jereme Brooks led all receivers with 135 yards and one TD on six receptions, while rushing for another score in the rout.

Donovan Porterie completed 15-of-32 passes for 186 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for the Wolfpack (0-9, 0-5), who suffered their 13th straight setback since their last win, on October 18 of last year, in a 70-7 rout of San Diego State.

Ty Kirk registered four catches for 82 yards and a score, while Victor James recorded a late TD catch.

"This was the first game I felt like we didn't come out with the effort in the third quarter we needed," New Mexico head coach Mike Locksley said.

The Utes wrapped up the game with a strong third quarter, which saw them go ahead 38-7 on a 20-yard connection from Wynn to Shakerin, a 29-yard TD run by Brooks and Wide's 35-yard scamper to paydirt.

It was a 38-point bulge for the home team on Shakerin's eight-yard run for a score early in the fourth, and New Mexico hit double digits in the waning seconds on a 15-yard scoring pass from B.R. Holbrook to James.

Wynn's 69-yard connection with Brooks opened the scoring with under six minutes left in the first quarter, but Porterie hit Kirk for a 59-yard score on the next series.

Utah moved ahead 17-7 at the break after a one-yard run from Wide and a 24- yard field goal from Joe Phillips.

Game Notes
