NCAA Game Summary - Akron At Northern Illinois

(Sports Network) - Chan Spann ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Northern Illinois Huskies in a 27-10 victory over the Akron Zips in Mid-American Conference play.

Quarterback DeMarcus Grady added 109 yards on the ground for NIU (5-3, 3-1 MAC) and he also completed 10-of-18 pass attempts for 62 yards.

For Akron (1-7, 0-4), Andre Jones had a big day, finishing with six receptions for 154 yards and a score.

The first half was a defensive struggle and NIU took a 6-0 lead to the break courtesy of two field goals by Mike Salerno. He hit one from 22 yards early in the first quarter and another from 37 yards away late in the second period.

Akron got on the board early in the third quarter, when Branko Rogovic connected on a 34-yard field goal. The Zips then grabbed a 10-6 lead, as Jones hauled in an 80-yard touchdown pass from Alex Allen.

NIU took over in the final quarter, scoring 21-unaswered points for the 27-10 victory. Spann scored on runs of 28 and two yards, respectively, while Nathan Palmer sealed the game with a seven-yard scamper to paydirt with under a minute left.

The Huskies rushed for 275 yards in the win, while limiting the Zips to only 31 yards on the ground.
