Padres Tab Hoyer As General Manager

POSTED: 2:34 pm PDT October 26, 2009

(Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres officially named Jed Hoyer as their new general manager on Monday.

Hoyer, 35, becomes one of the youngest general managers in baseball after serving in the Red Sox front office since 2002. His most recent title was senior vice president and assistant general manager.

New Padres owner Jeff Moorad recently fired longtime general manager Kevin Towers earlier this month after Towers held the title since 1995 -- the longest tenured general manager at the time of his dismissal.

"Jed comes from a championship organization where he gained hands-on experience for a club that has had tremendous success in its baseball operations and, particularly, in player development," said Moorad. "We are fortunate to add someone as highly respected and well-thought-of in the industry as Jed."

Hoyer becomes the eighth general manager in the history of the Padres, a team that has yet to win a World Series title since their inception in 1969. San Diego had recorded two consecutive losing campaigns, including a 75-87 mark in 2009.

"From my initial conversations with Jeff Moorad and [team president] Tom Garfinkel, it was apparent that there is a strong commitment to winning here and I am thrilled to have this opportunity," said Hoyer, who was also given the title of executive vice president.
