Wide Helps Utah Edge Air Force In OT

POSTED: 9:30 pm PDT October 24, 2009

(Sports Network) - Eddie Wide's second touchdown of the game, a one-yard run in overtime, sent 19th-ranked Utah past Air Force, 23-16, in a Mountain West showdown.

Utah received the ball first in the extra session and completed the series with Wide's go-ahead TD. Air Force got its turn and moved to the Utes' seven- yard-line on a run by Connor Dietz. On 4th-and-2 from the seven, Utah's defense stacked up Dietz for no gain to end the game.

Wide compiled 121 yards on 17 carries and Terrance Cain was 11-of-21 passing for 167 yards and a TD for the Utes (6-1, 3-0 MWC), who have won four in a row.

Dietz went 7-of-10 for 64 yards but gained 98 yards on the ground on 28 rushes for the Falcons (4-4, 3-2), losers in three of their last four.

Wide's 45-yard fumble return for a touchdown got the Utes on the board but the extra point was missed. Air Force struck back with a 27-yard field goal by Erik Soderberg and a one-yard run by Jared Tew.

Cain hooked up with David Reed on a 90-yard catch-and-run to put Utah ahead 13-10 in the third quarter, but Joe Phillips evened the score with a 31-yard field goal.

Soderberg was good from 49 yards away with just under 6 1/2 minutes left in regulation to force the tie.

Game Notes.

Utah has won six of the last seven meetings but Air Force leads the all-time series, 14-12...Both schools are in action next Saturday, as the Utes host Wyoming and the Falcons head to Colorado State.
