POSTED: 9:42 pm PDT October 17, 2009

(Sports Network) - Alfred Morris scored on a one-yard touchdown run with just under five minutes remaining as the Florida Atlantic Owls squeaked by the North Texas Mean Green, 44-40, in a Sun Belt Conference tussle.

Morris finished with 147 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Florida Atlantic (1-4, 1-1 SBC), which got 308 passing yards and three touchdowns from Rusty Smith.

Lance Dunbar was sensational in the loss for North Texas (1-5, 0-3), as he posted 238 yards and three touchdowns on 25 rushing attempts.

North Texas led 13-0 after one quarter, thanks to a one-yard touchdown run by Darius Carey and a four-yard scamper by Dunbar.

The second quarter featured plenty of offense, as FAU scored a staggering 30 points in the frame. Smith threw a pair of touchdowns in the frame, a 10- yarder to Jason Harmon and a 31-yarder to Chris Bonner. Smith also had a 17- yard touchdown run in that second quarter, and Morris had a two-yard scoring scamper. Ross Gornall added a 26-yard field goal for the Owls, who led 30-19 at intermission.

During that offensive onslaught by FAU, North Texas only managed one score, a 69-yard touchdown pass from Riley Dodge to Jamaal Jackson.

In the third quarter, FAU extended its lead to 37-19 with a seven-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Lester Jean.

North Texas then caught fire, scoring three unanswered touchdowns to grab a 40-37 edge. After an 18-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Tune to Darius Carey, Dunbar scored on runs of 23 and nine yards.

Florida Atlantic then drove 71 yards on seven plays, culminating with the one- yard touchdown run by Morris with 4:55 left on the clock.

The Owls didn't commit a single turnover in the clash, a key to the victory.
