NCAA Game Summary - Vanderbilt At Army

POSTED: 2:05 pm PDT October 10, 2009

(Sports Network) - Andrew Rodriguez forced a fumble in overtime and Alex Carlton kicked a 42-yard field goal, as the Army Black Knights escaped with a 16-13 win over the Vanderbilt Commodores at Michie Stadium.

Army (3-3) quarterback Trent Steelman was just 7-of-16 passing for 47 yards, but he led the team on the ground with 25 carries for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Vanderbilt (2-4) quarterback Larry Smith completed just 11-of-24 attempts and finished with 144 passing yards and two interceptions in the loss.

After a scoreless first quarter, Army got on the board with a 51-yard field goal by Carlton midway through the second quarter. It was the longest field goal by an Army kicker since 1994.

Vanderbilt tied it on a 19-yard field goal by Ryan Fowler at the 11:12 mark of the third quarter.

Steelman capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run to give Army a 10-3 lead in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.

But Vanderbilt's Warren Norman returned the ensuing kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown to tie it right back up.

With nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Smith was intercepted by Army defensive back Donovan Travis, who returned it down to the Vanderbilt 7. But the Commodores defense held strong, and Army had to settle for three points on a 23-yard field goal by Carlton.

The Vanderbilt offense put together a late drive and Ryan Fowler sent the game to overtime with a 41-yard field goal in the final minute of regulation.

Vanderbilt had the first possession of overtime but Rodriguez jarred the ball loose from Norman at the one-yard line, and the ball rolled out of the end zone for a touchback. Carlton's game-winning field hit the left upright and bounced through the posts.

With their three wins on the season, Army has already matched its win total from the last three seasons.
