Lochte Beats Teammate Peirsol To Take 200m

POSTED: 8:02 pm PDT August 14, 2008

Six down, two to go.

Michael Phelps, already the all-time winningest Olympian, pulled within two gold medals of breaking Mark Spitz's record by winning the 200-meter individual medley by a body length for his sixth gold of the Beijing Olympics.

Phelps lowered his own world record in the event by .57 seconds with a time of 1 minute, 54.23 seconds.

Hungary's Laszlo Cseh took silver, more than two seconds behind Phelps at 1:56.52.

American Ryan Lochte set a world record and beat U.S. teammate Aaron Peirsol on Friday to in the 200-meter backstroke at the Beijing Olympics.

He touched in 1 minute, 53.94 seconds to break the world mark he shared with Peirsol by .38 seconds. It was his third medal in Beijing, and second gold.

Peirsol, the gold medalist in the 100 backstroke, took the silver medal .39 seconds behind his teammate at 1:54.33. He swept both backstroke events at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Russia's Arkady Vyatchanin claimed bronze at 1:54.93.

Phelps now has six gold medals in Beijing -- all with world records. He has equaled his gold take from the 2004 Athens Olympics (he also won two bronze there) and sits two away from breaking Spitz's record from the 1972 Munich Games.

Now the "Baltimore Bullet" has just one individual race remaining in Beijing: the 100-meter butterfly on Sunday against world record holder and teammate Ian Crocker, who specializes in the event.

Phelps -- who will also be a part of the favored U.S. team in the 400-meter medley relay -- beat Crocker for the 100 fly gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics and also beat him at the U.S. Olympic trials.
