U.S. Swimmer Wins Record 8 Gold Medals

Aug. 9: 400m Individual Medley

Phelps won the 400m IM, smashing his own world record and winning by more than two seconds. His time of 4:03.86 was more than a second faster than the record he set at the Olympic Trials last month.

Aug. 10: 4x100m Freestyle Relay

Phelps won his second gold of the games, thanks to the blistering final leg of the relay swam by teammate Jason Lezak. Lezak, entering the pool more than a half-second behind the favored French team, made up the deficit thanks to the fastest relay split in history of 46.06 to win gold by .08 of a second. Phelps' lead off the relay with what had been an American record relay split of 47.51 seconds.

Aug. 11: 200m Freestyle

Michael Phelps won his third gold medal and record-tying ninth of his career Tuesday, breaking his own world record in the 200-meter freestyle at the Beijing Olympics. The American touched in 1 minute, 42.96 seconds, lowering his old mark of 1:43.86 set at last year's world championships in Australia. He is the only swimmer to ever swim a time faster than 1:44.

Aug. 12, 200m Butterfly

Michael Phelps has become the winningest Olympic athlete ever, earning his fourth gold medal of the Beijing Games with a world record in the 200-meter butterfly. The American touched in 1 minute, 52.03 seconds, breaking his old mark of 1:52.09 set at last year's world championships in Australia.

Aug. 12, 4x200m Freestyle Relay

Less than an hour after taking gold medal No. 4, Phelps was in the pool again for the 800 freestyle relay, a race the Americans were an overwhelming favorite to win. Swimming the first leg, he gave his team nearly a two-body-lengths lead over the first 200 meters, helping them take the world record of 6:58.58.

Aug. 14, 200m Individual Medley

Michael Phelps, already the all-time winningest Olympian, pulled within two gold medals of breaking Mark Spitz's record by winning the 200-meter individual medley by a body length for his sixth gold of the Beijing Olympics. Phelps lowered his own world record in the event by .57 seconds with a time of 1 minute, 54.23 seconds.

Aug. 15, 100m Butterfly

Michael Phelps beat Milorad Cavic of Serbia to the wall to win the 100-meter butterfly Friday, tying Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals at a single Olympics. With his arms fully outstretched, the American touched in 50.58 seconds, brreaking Cavic's Olympic record of 50.76 set in the semifinals.

Aug. 16.: 4x100m Medley Relay

Michael Phelps and his relay team, which included Aaron Pierson, Brendan Hansen and Jason Lezak, won Sunday in a world-record 3.29.34 seconds, lowering the old mark of 3.30.68 set four years ago in Athens.
