U.S. Open: Former Champ Kuznetsova Advances

No. 6 Chakvetadze Has Not Lost A Set In Tournament

Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova will appear in her second career U.S. Open quarterfinal after posting a fourth-round victory Monday in New York.

The fourth-seeded Russian whipped Belarusian teenager Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 6-3 in the first match at Ashe Stadium on Day 8. The 18-year-old Azarenka bowed out in 74 minutes with the help of 25 unforced errors on a breezy, sun- drenched afternoon.

The 22-year-old Kuznetsova captured her lone Grand Slam event title here at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in 2004 by beating Elena Dementieva in an all-Russian finale. The two-time major finalist Kuznetsova was last year's runner-up at the French Open.

Meanwhile, in the final match of the night, sixth-seeded Russian Anna Chakvetadze easily bested Austria's Tamira Paszek 6-1, 7-5 in just 78 minutes. Chakvetadze has yet to lose a set in the tournament.

Kuznetsova's opponent in the quarters will be another unseeded 18-year-old, surging Hungarian Agnes Szavay, who handled Ukrainian Julia Vakulenko 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) at Armstrong Stadium. The rising Szavay, who will appear in her first- ever Grand Slam quarterfinal, lost to Kuznetsova in a hardcourt finale in New Haven less than two weeks ago.

The talented Szavay has yet to lose a set at this particular fortnight.

Chakvetadze's next opponent will be 18th-seeded Shahar Peer, who became the first-ever Israeli to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals by blasting Polish giant-killer Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 6-1. The 30th-seeded Radwanska stunned defending champion Maria Sharapova here on Saturday.

The 20-year-old Peer, who also reached the quarters at the Aussie Open back in January, has progressed steadily here in New York over the last three years, having reached the third round in 2005, the fourth round last year and the round of eight this season.
