Legend has it that the building is haunted. Yet all of that would mean nothing without the innovative Mexican food that brings back its patrons again and again. Some of the highest quality authentic Mexican food in El Paso is made and served by the women of La Mujer Obera, a small job-training facility hidden away in the east end of El Paso near S. Piedras Street. Who knew?This restaurant is not only the cornerstone of local neighborhood revitalization, it is the only eatery in El Paso that specializes in the Mexican food of the interior of Mexico. Standard on the menu are such dishes as green mole poblano and caldo tlalpeno, although more familiar staples such as caldo de res can also be found. Cafe Mayapan also ventures beyond the ordinary in its selection of agua fresca, including a refreshing watermelon sandia. An imported Mexican handicraft mercado is next door. Mariachi bands perform at the restaurant on Fridays.Don't despair if you absolutely can't make it during lunch hours. Cafe Mayapan is available for booking at other hours by large groups. The experience begins as you drive out of El Paso with your back to the setting sun and with the song of the desert coyotes in your ears. Many couples have weddings out here. Don't worry about how desolate the area looks, or that your cellphone is no longer getting reception. You haven't gone too far.As you walk into the doors of the Cattleman's Steakhouse, the view might make you think you are still outside. The menu of this steakhouse is so simple but so delicious: steak or ribs, baked potato, baked beans, a coleslaw made with pineapple that will make you regret going back to your usual recipe.
