For many football fans, it's traditional to do a shot, drink a beer or imbibe in some other vaguely ceremonial way when one's team scores. This year, with two of the most high-powered offenses in recent history going on the field, that kind of thing could lead to alcohol poisoning or, worse, becoming a Cowboys fan.Unless you've recently joined a fraternity or are planning to watch the game in a bar along Bourbon Street, you probably don't want to drink vast quantities while watching the Super Bowl. So why not go for quality over quantity this year? Get the really good stuff, and make some really good drinks with it.
One great choice is to go with drinks that are themed around the participating themes, and even the host city for the game.Let's get the most obvious one out of the way first: For New Orleans, you've got to have Hurricane cocktails, the drinks that made Pat O'Brien's bar famous. You can find our house recipe for those right here.Miami, besides hosting the Super Bowl this year, is also the home of my very favorite Latin chef, Ingrid Hoffmann. She's got a recipe for a cocktail that will make your taste buds dance with a Brazilian beat.
4 limes, cut in 8 pieces each
½ cup sugar
1 cup cachaca (Brazilian sugar cane rum)
¼ cup pomegranate liqueurIn a heavy glass container, combine the limes and the sugar. With a meddler or pestle, crush the limes with the sugar, extracting the juice. Add the cachaca and the pomegranate liquor and and shake.Serve it in glasses full with crushed ice or cubes. For more of Ingrid's awesomely flavorful creations, visit www.delicioso.com.For Indianapolis, my pals Glen and Maggie at www.indychannel.com tell me the most famous cocktail in Colts-town is the shrimp cocktail. Seriously. So how about a Mule Kick? Mix equal amounts of tequila, peach schnapps and amaretto almond liqueur, stir and serve over ice.Speaking of tequila, my friends over at Patrón, some of the finest cactus squeezings on the planet, have some seriously high-end cocktails that will impress even the most booze-fluent guest. You may have to hunt a bit for some of these ingredients, but it'll be worth it!First, the classic margarita, Patrón style:
1 ½ oz Patrón Silver
¾ oz Citronge
½ oz Lime juice
¼ oz Orange juice
¼ oz Agave nectar
Lime WedgeMix the first five ingredients in a margarita shaker. Serve in a chilled highball or margarita glass, rimmed with salt if desired. Garnish with the lime wedge.
1 ½ oz Patrón Anejo
1 oz Lillet Rouge
1 oz Orange curacao
Splash orange bittersMix well, serve over ice.You can find other great cocktail recipes at the Patrón Web site.Me, I'll be drinking Yuengling or Shiner Bock ... with plans to hoist a shot of Southern Comfort when the Saints win the game. (Colts fans send hate mail here)
