Awards And Recognition: Madonna's music videos has garnered 56 MTV Music Award nominations, more than any other artist. She's won the award 17 times. Madonna also received the 1986 MTV Video Vanguard Award.

Big Break: Madonna was part of the Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe before becoming a fixture in the New York nightclub scene as a member of different punk and disco bands and as a backup singer in the early '80s. In 1982, deejay Mark Kamins made a club hit out of Madonna's single "Everybody," and she was promptly signed to Warner Bros. She ventured into acting with a small part in 1985's "Vision Quest" and then starred in "Desperately Seeking Susan."

Off The Mic: Her mother died of breast cancer when Madonna, the third of eight children, was 6. In high school, Madonna was a straight-A student and a cheerleader. The singer has been at the center of several controversies during her career, mostly involving the objections of religious groups to her overt sexuality. Madonna was married to actor Sean Penn from 1985-1989. She has one child with fitness trainer Carlos Leon, Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon, born Oct. 14, 1996. Madonna is engaged to British film director Guy Ritchie and is pregnant with his child.
