Fire Officials Say County Fires Nearly Contained

The Witch Fire, the biggest and most destructive blaze to ravage San Diego County this month, was 99 percent contained Tuesday, and the Harris and Poomacha fires were on their way out as well, authorities said.

The California Department of Forestry projects full containment of all three fires sometime Wednesday.

Since breaking out Oct. 21 along Highway 78 between Ramona and Julian, the Witch fire has destroyed about 1,040 homes and scorched 197,990 acres, according to Cal Fire.

So far, its suppression costs have reached an estimated $15 million. Two civilians and 40 firefighters have been injured.

The county's second-worst inferno, the Harris Fire, which started the same Sunday and has been burning southeast of San Diego, was 95 percent contained Tuesday evening, Cal Fire spokeswoman Roxanne Provaznik said.

The 90,440-acre blaze killed five people and destroyed about 200 homes and 250 outbuildings.

The estimated cost of fighting the fire was $15.2 million, according to the state agency. Twenty-one civilians and 34 firefighters were reported injured.

Meanwhile, the 49,540-acre Poomacha Fire, which started with a structure fire on La Jolla Indian Reservation a week ago Tuesday, was 70 percent contained Tuesday, Provaznik reported.

The conflagration, which eventually merged with the Witch Fire, has destroyed 136 homes in northern San Diego County. Its suppression price tag has been put at $10.2 million.
