Allegations Against Red Light Cameras Mount

Timing Of Yellow Lights Latest Issue

In a growing list of allegations against the city's red light camera system, some opponents of the cameras claim that the timing of some lights was manipulated to shorten the yellow, 10News reported. Ernie Odivar Odivar Talks To 10News; See Video Of Traffic Light Timings Postal worker Ernie Odivar (pictured, left) claimed Monday that after the camera was installed at Mission Bay Drive and Grand Avenue, the length of the yellow light was shortened from 4.7 seconds to 3 seconds. According to Odivar, the light was only recently set back to its original timing by traffic engineers; but only after Odivar received a ticket at the light. Odivar says that timing of the lights should be part of an internal audit ordered for all red light cameras by the city attorney's office. Grace Radachellini says that she's gone up and down La Jolla Village Drive timing the lights, and that the yellow light at every intersection is longer than the yellow light at Town Center Drive, where a camera is located. Radachellini says that she has never had a ticket before and feels that this one is unfair. "I plan to fight it in court," she said. Red Light Camera Is The County's Arrangement With Lockheed Martin Ethical? Tickets Dismissed At Three Intersections A second complaint stemmed from allegations that Lockheed Martin moved sensors at three intersections, calling into question the validity of tickets issued at those lights. Tickets issued after May 18, 2000 at those intersections are reportedly being dismissed. According to San Diego City Attorney Casey Gwinn, the recorded message is available for motorists issued tickets at the following intersections:
  • 16th & F Streets
  • Ingraham and Garnet
  • Mira Mesa Boulevard and Black Mountain Road
The hotline number is (619) 533-5604. Last week, Police Chief David Bejarano called for an audit of all 19 red light photo enforcement cameras in San Diego. Citations issued at 16 other San Diego intersections where photo enforcement cameras are in place remain valid, according to Gwinn's office.
