State Orders Red Light Cameras Checked

Timing Must Meet State Standards

California cities that use cameras to catch red-light runners have been ordered to check the timing of yellow lights to make sure they meet state standards.

The order comes from Sacramento, where lawmakers approved a bill requiring cities to confirm that they haven't shortened the yellow lights to generate revenue from red-light cameras.

Governor Gray Davis signed the bill earlier this month.

Nearly a dozen cities in the state use red-light cameras.

In San Diego, the cameras have been shut off temporarily while the city conducts a comprehensive review of the program.

A judge in San Diego threw out nearly 300 red-light camera tickets in September after finding that the city's camera system was unreliable.
