Be Prepared For Trip To Pediatrician's Office

Good Communication Key To Relationship With Child's Doctor

POSTED: 11:21 am PST December 8, 2004

Do you feel like you're always being rushed during a visit with your child's pediatrician? Follow the tips below to make the most of your next visit.

The birth of a newborn marks the beginning of a new relationship between you and your child, as well as between you and your child's pediatrician.

To get the most out of your pediatrician, be prepared. You should be able to clearly express your concerns before going to the pediatrician's office. Imagine you are the doctor and ask yourself what you would want to know. For instance, when did the illness begin? What treatments have you given? You might even want to give your child a head-to-toe exam before heading to the doctor.

The more information you can give your doctor, the more likely you'll leave the office with the right diagnosis.

Also, stick to the point. If your doctor has squeezed you in to see your sick child, don't surprise her with a more complex medical question. Schedule a later visit when she has more time to speak about the topic.

Examining an upset child is difficult on everyone. Before the visit, help your child feel comfortable by playing doctor at home with a toy or reading a book about doctor visits.

If your pediatrician has done something to bother you, talk about it and work it out.

The relationship between you and your child's pediatrician is based on good communication. If you decide you need to switch practices, speak to her directly about your feelings or write her a letter.
