SPECIAL ELECTION

Bilbray, Busby Win Spots In Runoff

Runoff Election To Be Held June 6

Former Republican U.S. Rep. Brian Bilbray and Democrat Francine Busby will face off in the June 6 runoff election to replace Randy "Duke'' Cunningham in the 50th Congressional District.

Busby topped the 18-candidate field Tuesday with almost 44 percent of the votes.

Bilbray won just over 15 percent, but Busby is still considered the underdog because of the heavy Republican registration in the district.

With 100 percent of the precincts reporting early Wednesday, Busby had 56,147 votes.

Bilbray had 19,366 votes, while political newcomer Eric Roach, who spent $1.8 million on his own campaign, had 18,486 votes, or 14 percent.

Cunningham resigned from the House of Representatives after pleading guilty to taking $2.4 million in bribes in exchange for steering businesses toward defense contractors.
