SAN DIEGO -- Armoires, bureaus and candelabras are just some of the items that ended the career of former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, 10News reported.A week ago, Cunningham pleaded guilty to federal corruption and bribery charges for taking $2.4 million in bribes to steer business to defense contractors. This week, federal officials displayed the furniture confiscated from Cunningham. In the corner of a warehouse sat a compilation of some of the items Cunningham accepted. Those items included armoires dating from the late 18th century, oriental rugs and runners, a Cedar lined lingerie chest and a carved oak cabinet with leaded glass inserts.
While experts appraised the collective value of Cunningham's lifestyle, the former congressman formally submitted his letter of resignation to the House of Representatives Tuesday afternoon.San Diego Democrats say the corruption doesn't stop with Cunningham. At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, San Diego Democratic Party Chairman Jess Durfee shared a list of local Republicans who have accepted money from Cunningham's co-conspirators.The list includes four people either declared or considering running for Cunningham's open 50th District seat -- Brian Bilbray, Mark Wyland, Bill Morrow and George Plecia. The contributions were all legal."However, Durfee said no local Democrats accepted money from MZM, SDCS or their associates. But they have not checked the background of every Democrat in Congress.
