SAN DIEGO -- The investigation into possible corruption at City Hall is coming to a head. Grand jury indictments are imminent in the investigation into alleged influence buying among the San Diego City Council, 10News reported.
Sources close to the investigation revealed details of the government's case against City Council members who are at the heart of the investigation. Council members Charles Lewis, (pictured, left), and Ralph Inzunza, (pictured, far left), allegedly made promises to do certain favors for strip-club owners in exchange for campaign contributions.
Strip-club money-man Lance Malone gave thousands of dollars to Lewis and Inzunza. In return, the strip clubs allegedly wanted the City Council to relax ordinances regulating the clubs. But the third city council member, Michael Zucchet, (pictured, middle), did not fit this scenario. When 10News checked his campaign records, it appeared as if Zucchet never took any money from the strip clubs. But sources are now saying FBI wire taps allegedly caught Zucchet saying he did not have a problem taking money from the strip clubs, but he did not want it to appear to be coming from the club owners or their associates. According to 10News sources, this is the gist of the case against Zucchet and, in the government's eyes, his alleged attempts to hide the source of political contributions constitutes wire fraud. After contacting Zucchet's office, 10News was referred to his attorney, who has yet to return the calls. The investigation is being conducted behind closed doors, and the grand jury proceedings are secret. No one is talking publicly about the case -- it would be a violation of federal law to do so.
