Minnesota Set To Entertain Pols

Twin Cities Offer RNC Attendees Bathroom Humor, More Drinks

POSTED: 8:56 pm PDT July 9, 2008

The Republican National Convention, which will be held in St. Paul, Minn., from Sept. 1-4, will give attendees plenty to do in the name of politics, but in the name of free time, the Twin Cities will offer those same attendees an outlet to explore their wild sides while remaining "Minnesota nice."

Upon arrival in the Twin Cities at the Charles Lindbergh Airport, RNC-goers will be able to see a tourist attraction right off the plane, visiting the bathroom and notorious bathroom stall where Sen. Larry Craig was arrested in connection to soliciting male prostitution. There, convention goers will be able to get their picture taken, posing with their foot and hand extended under the stall wall.

The attendees will no doubt retire to their personal lodgings after their day of travel, and, depending on who was in charge of booking their lodgings, could range from a $600 apartment to a $10,000 downtown St. Paul condo, though attendees choosing to rent an apartment or condo may not have the blessing of organizers.

In anticipation for the RNC being held in St. Paul, government officials have reached across the aisles to ensure that one nonpartisan need was met. Legislators in the five Twin Cities-area counties extended bar time by two hours, from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m.

This will come in handy, as a string a bars are located within a five minute walk from the Xcel Center.

Local favorites within earshot of the Xcel Center include The Corner Bar, the Irish-themed bars The Liffey and Patrick McGovern's, though many others are a short walk, drive or tax payer-funded helicopter ride away.

If the convention does not offer enough high comedy or drama for some convention goers, the Twin Cities offer an array of theatre venues, highlighted by the Guthrie and the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre.

During the convention, the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre is offering three plays: Married Alive, Swing and The Wonder Bread Years; The Guthrie will be offering "Little House on the Prairie."

When it comes to food, the Twin Cities offer an array of choices for visitors, and depending on how much of their constituents' money they want to spend and how far one wants to stray from the friendly confines of the Republican National Convention, attendees have will be able to stuff their stomachs after they're done stuffing their pockets.

If extended bar times and the theatre isn't up an event-goer's alley, the Twin Cities also are home to some of the world's finest museums, including the Minnesota Science Museum and the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices.

At the latter, convention attendees will be able to peruse devices such as the Micro-Dynameter and Relaxicisor, and if their history involves a personal injury, he or she will be infused with nostalgia of malpractice law suits from trial days of the past.

And finally, if RNC attendees seek humor that isn't so "Minnesota Nice," Comedy Central's flagship program The Daily Show will be broadcasting from downtown St. Paul during the convention.
