POSTED: 12:53 pm PDT October 6, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Carolina Hurricanes have signed forward Dan LaCouture to a one-year contract, assistant general manager Ron Francis announced Monday.

The deal will pay LaCouture $475,000 if he is on the NHL roster or $50,000 if he plays in the American Hockey League. The contract also guarantees him $75,000 regardless of where he plays.

"Dan came into our camp in great physical condition and earned himself a contract," Francis said. "He is an experienced, veteran player with good speed and size and is capable of contributing on the NHL level."

LaCouture, 31, has played in 326 career NHL games with Edmonton, Pittsburgh, the New York Rangers, Boston and New Jersey. He has 18 goals and 25 assists along with 338 penalty minutes with those teams.

He spent the 2007-08 season with HC Lugano of the Swiss League, posting two points in 15 games.
